Spinner Ted Greally returned his best figures of the season as North London overcame MTSSC by 33 runs at Montenotte Road in Division Three of the Middlesex County Cricket League.

NL struggled to force the pace after being put in and could only muster 180-8 from their 55 overs.

But that score proved to be ample as Greally, with 6-44, and spin partner Pete Monar (3-27) bowled out the Tamils for just 146 to lift NL to sixth in the table.

The home side suffered a blow when Paul Brierley (6) was bowled by Kavithasan Kannatasan, but Sam Bardon and Hussain Shabbir built a solid platform.

Ashok Andrew (2-21) pegged NL back as he removed Bardon (24) and then Jack Godfrey-Wood (4).

NL needed a sizeable knock to anchor their innings, but it never arrived as Shabbir was run out for 33 and skipper Jack Atchinson hit 38 before he became the second victim of Kannatasan (4-65).

With Rosh Tennakoon run out for a duck and Kannatasan removing both Tom Wakeford (12) and Freddie Issitt (1), it was left to Monar and Greally to ensure that NL saw out their maximum overs.

Monar finished undefeated on 31, with Greally 11 not out – and the extras tally of 20 was also a valuable ingredient in NL’s total.

Tight bowling from Matthew Rosson (1-16) prevented MTSSC from getting away to a flyer in reply and he also made the initial breakthrough, having Andrew (9) caught by Shabbir.

Yet the visitors seemed well-placed until NL turned to their spinners, with Greally bowling Mustafa Bhagat (21) and having Jenson Singarajah (16) stumped.

Greally also pierced the defence of Nisham Mazahir (10) and trapped Raghukulan Loganathan (7) leg before, while Monar picked up the key wicket of Jagath Gangeswaran (22).

Monar also got rid of Niroshan Sritharan (1) and Sivathasan Kailasapillai – bowling the latter first ball – but Kannatasan made a late bid to salvage the game by plundering 29 from 28 deliveries.

It was Greally who finally ended MTSSC hopes, having Kannatasan caught and winning an lbw decision against Abdul Hamza (1) to wrap up the innings.
