England one-day star Eoin Morgan will take over as Middlesex captain in limited-overs cricket after Neil Dexter announced his decision to stand down.

Morgan, who is England’s vice-captain for the World Twenty20 Cup in March, has agreed to lead the Panthers in their 50-over and 20-over cup competitions this summer.

The 27-year-old left-hander has confirmed that he will not be involved in this year’s Indian Premier League and, injury permitting, should be available for all but three of Middlesex’s limited-overs fixtures.

All-rounder Dexter, who took over as captain midway through the 2010 season and led the club to the County Championship Division Two title a year later, resigned his four-day role in 2012.

Although he continued as limited-overs skipper, effectively sharing the job with Chris Rogers, Dexter has now decided to relinquish the position and concentrate on his own game.

“Middlesex are fortunate, in Eoin, to have one of the game’s best young cricket brains at the club,” said the county’s managing director of cricket, Angus Fraser.

“When Neil informed me of his desire to stand down, we were lucky that we did not have to look far for a replacement.

“Everyone is excited at the prospect of working under Eoin.

“I know that everyone at the club would like to thank Neil for the significant contribution he has made to Middlesex in the past three years.

“Neil has led by example and his values have helped create a good culture at Middlesex.”

Morgan, who has been with the club since 2006, helped them to victory in the Twenty20 Cup two years later and was appointed vice-captain to Shaun Udal.

He gave up the role after becoming a regular member of the England side and, despite losing his ECB central contract last winter, is still expected to feature heavily in limited-overs cricket for the national team.
