Middlesex lead by 49 runs after they rallied against Warwickshire to reach 89-1 at tea on day two of their County Championship Division Two at a stifling Lord’s on Monday afternoon.

Nick Gubbins (33*) and Steven Eskinazi (38*) put on a partnership of 71 after Paul Stirling was out for 16 with the score 18-1.

The powerful Ulsterman was the first red-ball wicket of all-rounder Chris Woakes summer after Jonathan Trott snaffled a chance.

Earlier the impressive Will Rhodes reached his second first class hundred of the season with a disciplined knock of 118 off 239 balls before he offered a caught and bowled chance to the tireless James Harris who ended the innings with figures of 4-84.

Wily stalwart Tim Murtagh took 3-43 with Ollie Rayner chipping in with 2-55 as the visitors were bowled out for 276, a lead of 40 at the change of innings.
