Brondesbury captain Andrew Wilson hailed his team’s improved batting in Saturday’s winning draw against Brentham, writes Sarah Bassett.

The home side finished the match with a score of 206-5 from 52 overs, compared with Brentham’s 126-6.

Wilson has previously drawn attention to the fact that batting has been his side’s weakness, contributing to their relegation from the Premier Division last season.

However, their result against Brentham indicates a significant improvement, with a particularly encouraging display from Will Russell.

Wilson was very pleased by his team’s effort with the bat.

He said: “It is definitely getting better and our last three games have seen us post scores of over 200.

“So it was a good day in terms of batting, and we put a good score on the board that we were happy with, but we were still left frustrated not to take 10 wickets in the second innings.”

Frustratingly for Russell, Wilson declared the Brondesbury innings closed while the batsman was unbeaten on 98.

But the captain explained his decision, saying: “Before the match we had all agreed that were not going to go any further than 52 overs.

“So fortunately Will was well aware that it was coming, despite really motoring his way from 60 to 90 runs.

“But at the end of the day, we did agree that we were going to set 52 as the maximum, so luckily he was prepared for it.

“Overall it was a frustrating match because, even though the flat pitch meant that we were able to restrict them well, we still feel that we were quite unfortunate not to take those wickets.”

Wilson believes Saturday’s match at Uxbridge could be vital in maintaining their aspirations of winning promotion.

Wilson added: “If we manage a win against Uxbridge it would certainly get us right up there challenging for the title. Turning winning draws into wins is what we need in order to vie for promotion.”
