Camden’s young cricketers have reached a prestigious final at Lord’s after progressing unbeaten through the male qualifiers at the London Youth Games indoor cricket competition at the weekend.

The borough team, aged year eight and under, topped Group H at Harrow Leisure Centre on Saturday.

They beat Richmond upon Thames by one wicket in arguably the match of the day - the winning run coming off a risky single with Richmond close to running them out.

Camden went on to beat Brent in another tight match with an impressive all-round display and can now look forward to the finals alongside seven other boroughs at Lord’s on Sunday March 1.

Team manager Philip Bowden was delighted with the team’s performance after two tough matches, having known the side needed to beat Richmond in their first match.

“That was tough because we knew that they were a very good side and it would be very tight - and it was very tight,” he said. “We thought that was the match we had to win to qualify.

“At the moment I feel quite relieved because it was a very close match. In fact, both our matches were really close.”

Indoor cricket is one of 31 sports in the 2015 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, which is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and is driving the legacy for increased participation in competitive sport and volunteering for young Londoners.

A record 126,897 young Londoners took part in the record-breaking 2014 Youth Games, taking the event to over one million participants since it first launched in 1977.
