Will Vanderspar hit a century while Rob Nelson took five wickets as Brondesbury beat basement boys North Middlesex by 146 runs in the Premier Division of the Middlesex County Cricket League.

Vanderspar hit 116 as Brondesbury declared on 259-6, and Nelson then claimed 5-23, while Sam Smith took 3-17 as North Midd collapsed from 89-1 to 113 all out.

It was Brondesbury’s first win in three games and it took them up a place to fourth in the table, although they remain 14 point off the top.

North Midd, meanwhile, remain winless and rooted to the bottom, 10 points from safety, after losing four of their games so far.

The visitors lost opener Hugh Gimber (7) early on after a delivery from Joel Hughes (1-35) but that brought Vanderspar to the crease, and he formed a formidable partnership with James Overy.

The pair added 109 together before Overy (34) was bowled by Ed Bird (1-38) but Simon Butler added 14 and Chris Blake then joined Vanderspar and helped to take the score to 192-3.

That became 202-5 as Connor Nurse (3-53) made inroads for North Midd with his second and third consecutive wickets, having Blake (23) and Sam Smith (2) caught by Evan Flowers and Alex Hill respectively.

But the runs kept coming, with Tommy Ricketts and Vanderspar making 34 together before the vibrant Vanderspar finally departed for 116, caught by Hughes off Mahruf Chowdhury (1-67).

Ricketts went on to make 31 before being the seventh man out, and Nelson (5 not out) and Tom Kopelman (4no) added some late runs before Brondesbury declared at 259-6 after 61 overs.

North Midd’s reply began strongly as they reached 49 without loss and, although Michael Clements (30) was trapped lbw by Fosbraey (30), Nurse and Evan Flowers took the score on to 89-1.

However, it was soon 89-4 as the visitors lost three quick wickets without troubling the scorers.

Nurse (27) departed leg before to Smith and Flowers (23) was stumped off Nelson, who then removed John Mills for a duck.

North Midd captain Tom Nicoll (8) became Nelson’s third successive victim, and the collapse continued as Will Nicoll (1) was trapped lbw by Smith and Nick Brand was run out for a duck.

The visitors were on the ropes at 107-7 and it was 107-8 moments later as Chowdhury (8) was caught by Butler off the bowling of Nelson.

Joe Hewton (0) was then caught behind off Smith before Nelson completed the victory, and his five-for, by removing last man Joel Hughes (6).
