After four games without a Premier Division victory, Brondesbury registered their first of the 2018 season on Saturday with a strong all-round display

James Overy was impressed with Brondesbury’s belief during their Middlesex County League Premier Division success over Teddington on Saturday.

Prior to the weekend, the Harman Drive club had yet to win in the top flight in 2018, but that all changed following a solid all-round team display.

After finishing on 203-6, Teddington made a strong start to their chase, but Anthony Wilkinson (1-25), Buddy Mason (1-26 and Jordan Bethel (1-46) claimed solitary scalps before Anshuman Rath spun Brondesbury to victory.

Rath finished with 5-16 off only 7.4 overs as the visitors were dismissed for 188 in the 49th over.

Brondesbury captain Overy said: “I was a bit worried when they were 60-0, but we always felt we were going to win, so that was good.

“Teddington started brilliantly and we probably gifted them a few runs, but as a group we felt in control and like we were going to win the whole way through.

“It was great to have that belief and we had a similar game in the first week of the season again Shepherds Bush, so again it was good to come through and learn lessons from before.

“Anshy bowled brilliantly to get 5-16 and he is mainly here to bat, but it was helpful he could bowl some good left-arm spin against one of the best teams in the league.

“He has been a great addition, but it was a proper team performance and that is what carried us through.

“In the field we were excellent, which is something we haven’t always been, but I pushed for us to improve in that area this year and it was great on Saturday.”

Brondesbury were helped by the performance of their captain, who top scored with the bat to make 60 off 127 balls.

Overy praised the efforts of his fellow batsmen with Joe Moore finishing unbeaten on 47 to help the hosts set an eventually unreachable total of 203-6

He added: “I had a decent season last year and after taking on the captaincy it was good to lead from the front and perform in this game.

“It was good for the lads to go in with a plan and stick to it too because we wanted to bat long as it was a difficult pitch.

“We learned the lessons from last week (away to Ealing) where we actually realised what a good score was early on and we didn’t panic, so we got a little bit more than we thought we might.

“Overall it was nice for the whole batting line-up to contribute and stick to a plan, so it was brilliant from everyone and good to see.”
