Harman Drive outfit beat Highgate by four wickets last weekend

James Overy knows Brondesbury must turn in another strong display at home to Finchley in the Middlesex County Premier Division on Saturday to aid their battle to beat the drop.

The Harman Drive outfit are currently in the bottom two and 16 points adrift of Twickenham, who represent safety, with a maximum of 30 left to play for.

Brondesbury head into the game with Finchley unbeaten their last two matches, their joint-best run of the season, and Overy is thrilled with how his side has played in those games.

But the skipper is aware the Harman Drive must reach those levels again if they are to get the better of Finchley.

“We know the only time it matters for us to be out of the relegation zone is at the end of the season,” said Overy.

“As long as we continue to play like we have in recent matches, then I’ll be happy and hopefully that leads to us being outside of the bottom two at the end of the season.

“We enjoy playing at home and our recent performances give us plenty of confidence ahead of playing Finchley.

“If we can get the win, then it makes what is already a big game against Twickenham the week after even more important.

“There are plenty of teams in this division with little to play for now, so we’re happy to still have something to fight for.”

Away to Highgate last week, Brondesbury ended a nine-match winless run in the league with a four-wicket success.

The Harman Drive outfit were set 214 to win and reached that score thanks in part to an unbeaten 117 off 107 balls from Anshuman Rath.

And Overy was full of praise for Rath after his brilliant ton guided Brondesbury to a long-awaited win.

“Anshy is one of, if not the, best player in this league and his innings against Highgate was one of the best you’re likely to see in club cricket,” added the skipper.

“He dragged us along from a difficult position when we were 93-6 and got us over the line.

“Anthony Wilkinson deserves credit too as Anshy needed someone to stay with him and he was that man.”
