The eighth GLL Camden International cadet sabre tournament was held at the Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park at the weekend, involving over 160 of the top fencers from 16 countries in Europe and beyond.

Camden Fencing Club’s Eden Amsalem, who lives in Tufnell Park and is Britain’s No1 ranked cadet, came 15th in the individual Under-17 men’s event, while Christian Lindsay was 26th and George Suddards – GB’s No2 – came 29th.

Achilles Bergne was 40th and Andreas Zotiades came 85th, ahead of Mark Omoboriowo (88th) and Zachary Klein (90th).

Camden were represented by a young up-and-coming squad in the women’s event, with Shreya Anil coming 45th and Helen Williams 46th in front of Gabrielle Black (50th), Lumeng Yang (57th) and Sophia Wanyi Yang (62nd).

The team event followed on Sunday and Great Britain’s men’s team, including Camden’s Amsalem and George – both of whom will be representing GB at the forthcoming European Cadet Championships in Maribor – performed strongly to finish in third, beating Germany in the bronze medal match.

The team from Camden, which was made up of younger fencers aged 13 and 14, finished in 18th place.

In the women’s event, a GB team including Camden’s Shreya Anil took away the gold, beating a combined team from Romania and Greece convincingly, 45-35. The team from Camden finished in seventh.

Event manager Katie Rhodes from British Fencing said: “It was a fantastic event, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The support of GLL, the London Borough of Camden, Continental Clothing, Fifth Column and Leon Paul fencing equipment made all the difference.

“Several people described this event as the best on the European cadet sabre circuit and we hope it will continue to run for many years.”
