Archant

The Labour Party have met expectations and kept control of Haringey Council, however their majority has been reduced by a Lib Dem surge.

From early on, it was clear that the party were set to struggle in key wards in the west of the borough where the Liberal Democrats have their strongest backing in the whole of north London.

Senior Labour figures tried to play down concerns early on in the day’s count, suggesting that they may also take seats from the Liberal Democrats in Highgate.

However as the results rolled in on Friday at Alexandra Palace, this didn’t materialise.

There was jubilation and tears as Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Fortis Green and Alexandra all turned yellow.

In the end, the Lib Dems previous tally of eight councillors was almost doubled to 15. This dropped Labour down to 42.

Labour’s deputy leader Jo Ejiofor said the losses had been down to a “substantial media attacks” over the last few weeks, and said 2014’s result had been a high watermark for the party.

However in her victory speech, Lib Dem interim leader, and Highgate councillor Liz Morris said while Labour had won the polling, they hadn’t won the “hearts and minds of residents.”
