Residents who can’t get to a polling station on election day are being urged to sign up to vote by post or proxy to ensure they can have their say.

This year’s election is taking place on Thursday, May 22, with people being asked to decide on their representatives at a local and European level.

In Haringey, all 57 seats across 19 wards up for election, along with the London region constituency in the European Parliament.

Voting will take place at designated polling stations on the day, but those who can’t get there can either apply for a postal vote or appoint someone to vote in person on their behalf – a “proxy” vote.

Postal votes are sent out around a week before the election and can be sent to any address – even abroad – but people need to consider if they are able to receive and return your ballot paper by May 22.

If not, people can apply for a proxy vote – although the council urges residents to visit their polling station themselves if possible.

Nick Walkley, returning officer and chief executive of Haringey Council, said: “It’s important everyone in our borough has the opportunity to cast their vote next month.

“I’d urge residents who are going away or are unable to get to their polling station to act now and apply for a postal or proxy vote to ensure their voice is heard.”

Postal vote applications forms must be returned to the council by Wednesday, May 7, while new applications for proxy voting must be received by Wednesday, May 14.

If your nominated proxy will be away on May 22, they can also apply for your ballot paper to be posted to them.

For more information and to download application forms, visit Haringey Council’s dedicated election website at http://voting.haringey.gov.uk/, or call 020 8489 1000, email elections@haringey.gov.uk or visit the electoral registration office at Haringey Civic Centre, in Wood Green, during weekday working hours.
