Council election 2014: Camden’s youngest candidate standing for Green Party

Camden’s youngest council election candidate – an 18-year-old schoolgirl set to sit her A-levels next month – insists the Green Party is the only credible left-wing party left in the UK.

Maisie King, a Year 13 pupil at Camden School for Girls, will stand as a Green candidate for Hampstead Town in next month’s election.

The teenager, who plans to start an art foundation course after finishing school and has already secured a place to study English at Oxford University, expressed concern about the current political climate.

“We live in quite worrying times,” she said. “Ukip (UK Independence Party) really scares me as a force and I don’t think there is any other party other than the Greens that represent the left.

“I hate how politics is being driven right, like David Cameron said Britain was a Christian country to appeal to the people who were thinking of voting for Ukip.

“A lot of my friends aren’t going to vote because it does seem really hopeless because all the parties seem really similar.

“I feel like the Labour Party may have once represented the people but New Labour is too much of a concession.

“The Greens are the only party who are really saying things that need to be said –about drug legalisation and the environment.”

Ms King, who lives with her parents in Camden Town, conceded that she held very little hope of being elected.

She added: “There’s pretty much no chance that I would get elected. I did it more as a show of support. In that unlikely situation of getting elected, I’d probably just do my best. I don’t even really know what a councillor would do.”
