There’s plenty for the whole family to enjoy on TV this Christmas as the channels compete with a bumper feast of festive delights to draw the viewers in. From a selection box of brand new programmes, to a stocking full of seasonal specials, we take a look at what’s on offer this Christmas on TV…

Jenna Coleman’s Clara returns to the Tardis in BBC1’s Doctor Who this Christmas, with Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, but will it be her exit show in the special entitled Last Christmas? All will be revealed in the episode set in the Arctic, with Michael Troughton and Nick Frost as Father Christmas.

Downton Abbey will return to ITV this Christmas for a two hour special as the Granthams visit Atticus’ family for a spot of Grouse shooting. New Tricks actor Alun Armstrong will join the cast as the Sinderby’s butler Stowell, who has a secret that threatens to undermine the group’s holiday.

Following on from the success of Christmas TV offerings Gangsta Granny and the BAFTA nominated Mr Stink, BBC One brings viewers a one hour special of David Walliams’ first children’s book.

The Boy in the Dress is the story of Dennis, a 12-year-old boy who lives in an ordinary house, in an ordinary street, in an ordinary town; but a chance view of Kate Moss on the cover of a fashion magazine in Raj’s newsagent introduces Dennis to a whole new world of colour. Great family viewing.

In the world of soaps, Coronation Street and Eastenders look set to give viewers a mix of hilarity, drunkenness and a healthy sprinkling of sobering moments.

ITV’s Corrie will see Maria and Luke finally admitting their ‘connection,’ whilst Kylie and David come up against trouble as Kylie’s ex Callum worms his way back into their life. Tracy Barlow reverts to her old ways, putting the dampeners on the festive spirits of the street’s residents.

In Eastenders, the Lucy murder investigation is about to enter its most dramatic phase. Lucy’s friend Lauren and twin brother Peter will find themselves seriously shaken by what lies ahead, not least an eerie twist on Christmas Day.

This Christmas also sees the return of Sir Bruce Forsyth in the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special with former celebrity contestants Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lisa Riley, Louis Smith and Russell Grant working their way through the ballroom repertoire.

The Black Mirror Christmas special on Channel 4 provides adults with some dark comedy as Mad Men’s John Hamm joins Rafe Spall and Game of Thrones’s Oona Chaplin for a one-off, 90-minute tale that will be, according to Channel 4, “the most mind-bending episode yet”.

For Game of Thrones fans, Sky Atlantic screens the entire back catalogue of the American fantasy drama starting on December 20. No need to buy that box set then!
