An exceptionally restored Victorian mansion that was formerly home to a Nobel Prize winner is now on the market on Bishopswood Road, Highgate.

Nobel Prize winner Archibald Hill was once a resident at 16 Bishopswood Road. Nobel Prize winner Archibald Hill was once a resident at 16 Bishopswood Road.

The six-bedroom home, which covers an expanse of 10,000 square feet, once belonged to Archibald Vivian Hill, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1922.

A.V Hill was an instrumental English physician and he was awarded this most coveted of prizes “for his discovery relating to the production of heat in the muscle.” Hill is said to have entertained guests including 18 exiled Nobel laureates as well as his friends Stephen Hawking and Sigmund Freud, living in the property between 1923 and 1967. A blue plaque was unveiled on site by English Heritage in 2015 to recognise the illustrious past of its former occupant.

The residence itself is a unique example of 19th century prestige meeting 21st century innovation. The original Victorian red-brick façade is retained – in line with the architecture of the surrounding area – but behind these period features the property includes a raft of state-of-the-art facilities.

The property's leisure suite features a pool, hot tub, sauna, gym and bar. The property's leisure suite features a pool, hot tub, sauna, gym and bar.

Set across six storeys in total – each accessible via the passenger lift which serves every floor – 16 Bishopswood Road includes a leisure suite with a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna and gym. An inbuilt bar and home cinema offers the option of cosy movie nights without having to leave the house, while the lavish master suite fills the entirety of the first floor.

Each of the six bedrooms features en-suite facilities, while there is a sprawling garden at the rear accessible via the grand entrance hall. The property is complete with a fully equipped kitchen for hosting and catering, while Creston touch screen panels help homeowners control temperature, music and security systems.

The property is on the market for £10million through Savills Hampstead and Glentree International.

Simon Edwards, consultant for Savills, said: “16 Bishopswood Road has been superbly restored to create a unique home, designed to suit the lifestyle of a modern family.

“It is unusual to see a property of such spacious proportions, both inside and out, in this area, especially a home with such an illustrious history.”

Robert Kramer, from Glentree International, added: “Highgate has emerged as one of London’s most desirable destinations. With its close proximity to Hampstead Heath, Hampstead and Highgate Village, and within easy reach of the City and West End, the property is conveniently located for both leisure and work life.
