Tottenham’s run of five straight victories came to an end as they were held to a draw at Hull.

The Lilywhites were lethargic for most of the game and were unable to play their domineering attacking football that has earned head coach Tim Sherwood a lot of praise.

Spurs fell behind to Shane Long’s effort when he raced through on goal and made no mistake.

The equaliser came from a set piece just after the hour mark when the ball fell to Paulinho and he made no mistake from 12 yards.

Spurs were boosted by the return of Jan Vertonghen and Paulinho, who were drafted into the starting XI at the expense of Vlad Chiriches and Mousa Dembele.

Danny Rose retained his place in the team after having his red card in the 5-1 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday overturned.

Hull made three changes from the side beaten by Crystal Palace – Steve Harper came in for the suspended Allan McGregor.

Meanwhile while Maynor Figueroa and Robbie Brady came into the line-up in place of Alex Bruce and the ineligible Jake Livermore as Tom Huddlestone started against his former club.

The home side started the stronger and gave the Tottenham defence an early headache.

Ahmed Elmohamady’s free kick fell to Nikica Jelavic and his effort whistled over the crossbar.

Spurs hit back and Hull stopper Steve Harper produced a wonderful diving effort to deny Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togo international had hit a first time volley that seemed destined for the corner but the veteran palmed the ball away.

Hull went straight down the other end. Jelavic won an aerial contest with Danny Rose and played in Long.

The former West Brom man, on his home debut, outmuscled Jan Vertonghen before firing past Hugo Lloris.

City were the better side and could have been 2-0 up when Jelavic’s free kick whistled past the post with the French goalkeeper beaten.

Tottenham, though, were struggling to string their passes together and only one moment of magic won a corner when a succession of one-touch football cut through the Humberside outfit.

That pattern continued throughout the first 15 minutes of second half until Spurs grabbed a goal out of nothing.

A free kick near the halfway line found its way to Rose. He tried to score a screamer from 40 yards but the ball was stopped by Paulinho.

The Brazilian turned and finished the job when he unleashed his effort past Harper into the roof of the net.

Neither side were able to have another meaningful shot on goal and both sides had to settle for a point.
