Spurs striker Kane hopes he’s done enough to leave Soldado on the bench

EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham youngster Harry Kane is hoping he has done enough to keep his place in the team and consign £26million man Roberto Soldado to the bench when the Spaniard returns from injury.

Soldado suffered a hamstring injury in the 4-0 defeat against Liverpool on March 30, giving 20-year-old Kane a rare chance to start up front.

The England Under-21 striker made his first Premier League start against Sunderland last Monday, marking the occasion with a goal – and he repeated the feat in the 3-3 draw at West Brom on Saturday.

Kane has now scored two goals in his two Premier League starts – both in open play – while Soldado has two from open play in his 22 top-flight starts this campaign, plus four penalties.

The Spaniard was back in training last week and could be back in contention for Saturday’s home game against Fulham, but Kane hopes he will have the chance to extend his goalscoring run.

“I’ve done what a striker has to do, you have to score goals,” he said. “Oviously I scored last Monday, I’ve scored again on Saturday, and it’s good for the manager to have to make that decision.

“Roberto’s on his way back but I’ve just got to keep my head down, keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully I’ll keep my place in the team.

“Football’s about competition for places, no matter where you’re at. Obviously Robbie’s a great player and we’ve all got to keep people on their toes.

“When you get the chance you’ve got to take it, and it’s been pleasing that I’ve managed to get two in two.”

Tottenham struggled to find the net earlier in the season but they have now scored eight goals in two games.

And, having pounced to convert Eriksen’s low cross against the Black Cats at the Lane last week, 6ft 2ins Kane feels his header at The Hawthorns has shown another side to his game.

“I back myself to be finishing with my head as well as my feet,” he said. “When I’m in the box, with my height, I know I’ll get chances. [Aaron] Lennon put a great ball into the air, and when it’s in the air I fancy myself.

“Ade [Emmanuel Adebayor] and I play well together, we’ve got a couple of goals, and the team’s got another three on Saturday. It shows we’re firing up front – but we wanted to win the game so we’re disappointed.

“On the other hand, we’re happy with the way we bounced back from being 3-0 down.

“After we missed the penalty and they got the third one we could easily have just folded and thrown in the towel, but we stuck together. We’re pleased with the spirit in the team.”
