Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen believes that Tim Sherwood is slightly more direct than Andre Villas-Boas after he made his first appearance for the new Spurs boss against Hull on Saturday.

The Belgian had been out of action since early December with an ankle injury and in the meantime Andre Villas-Boas was sacked as Spurs head coach and replaced by the Englishman.

And the 26-year-old defender was quick to pay tribute to the Portuguese coach.

“It’s always sad when you have to change manager,” he said. “Andre did well. He was unlucky at some moments.

“I think Tim is doing very well. He feels the connection with the players and everyone is happy with him.”

When asked what had changed under Sherwood’s management, he replied: “It’s difficult to tell.

“Every manager has his own thing. Tim is maybe a little bit more direct. You never know what the best thing is for the team so I think this is working out quite well.”

Vertonghen’s return coincided with the end of Tottenham’s winning run away from home as Hull held them to a 1-1 draw at the KC Stadium.

And he was disappointed not to gain ground on Liverpool, who were held to a draw by West Brom on Sunday.

“It’s a shame, we could have done better,” he explained. “I think we had a good game. 1-1 obviously isn’t enough here. We can bounce back next week.”

Having been out of action for nearly two months, Vertonghen was naturally pleased to be back playing again and is looking to improve as he finds match fitness.

He said: “I’m happy I’m back. It took me two months. I hope I can do better and better from next week.”
