Spurs man voices support for unsettled Aston Villa star

Jermain Defoe says he can sympathise with his former Tottenham team-mate Darren Bent after he was dropped by Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert for their last match against West Brom.

Bent, who has also lost the Villa captaincy since Lambert arrived, duly came off the bench to score a crucial equaliser against the Baggies.

However, the England striker refused to paint a positive picture of his situation at Villa Park afterwards, admitting he had not been given an explanation as to why he was dropped.

The former Sunderland striker also admitted he had undergone “a couple of c****y weeks”.

Defoe, who knows Bent from their time together at Spurs and with England, understands what the former Charlton hitman is going through.

“I feel sympathy for him,” Defoe said.

“Benty’s a good player. He has just come back from injury a few weeks ago.

“I had the same injury and sometimes it takes a while to get back to your best.

“But he is a natural goal scorer, so I am sure if he gets chances, he will score goals.

“He has a good character. I watched the game last week and that is what good goal scorers do.”
