Tottenham and England legend Gary Lineker admits he was shocked when Tottenham sacked former manager Harry Redknapp.
Former West Ham and Portsmouth boss Redknapp was axed during the summer after Spurs missed out on Champions League qualification.
He was replaced by ex-Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas but Lineker thinks the club could struggle to launch a genuine title challenge without major investment.
“I was bemused by what happened to Harry because he had done such a fantastic job at Tottenham, taking them from the bottom of the table and into a Champions League position,” Lineker told ESPN.
“I wonder how much further the team can go without massive investment, but that is their challenge.
“Are they really going to challenge for the title?”
Lineker added that the sale of Luka Modric to Real Madrid was a real blow for the White Hart Lane outfit.
“They sold one of their best players again during the summer and you don’t see the teams winning trophies doing that, so they need to bridge that gap before they are in there challenging for the Premier League.”
