Tim Sherwood says he is glad to finally get some time with his players on the training ground after the hectic festive period.

However, the new head coach feels that his baptism of fire – six games in his first 20 days as a manager – has helped him to hit the ground running and gain experience quickly.

“It’s been an abnormal time to take over, I would say, because there has been no breathing spaces from game to game and we have had a lot of injuries,” he said.

“But we’ve got a week between games and a week before the one after [away at Swansea], so we have some time on the training pitch to put more structure and instruction into the players – and hopefully we will improve from that.

“I haven’t had time to dwell too much on anything, it’s just been a case of moving on to the next one.

“It’s probably been a blessing, I’ve been to a lot of stadiums and managed a lot of games in a short space of time. Perhaps that’s never happened before.”

While Sherwood has lost both of his cup ties against West Ham and Arsenal, he has overseen a strong run of Premier League results, with Spurs collecting 10 points from a possible 12 on his watch – including a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

“We’ve got good players and we just try to get our best players on the ball as much as we can in dangerous areas of the field,” he said.

“They’re here for a reason, because they’re good players, and I want them to try to express themselves as much as they can.

“We have a meeting [before each game] and we tell them what we expect. Then I ask them, especially the foreign lads, if they totally understand.

“The last thing you want them to do is go onto the pitch and not understand what the manager wants – and they all nod and say ‘yeah’ and then we wait until the kick-off and see if they actually do!”
