Spurs boss: Levy’s offered to sign players but I’ve said no

Tim Sherwood has revealed that he has rejected chairman Daniel Levy’s offers to strengthen Tottenham’s squad in the January transfer window.

Spurs are yet to sign anyone in the winter window, and tonight’s 11pm deadline is quickly approaching.

Levy has a reputation for springing a surprise late on the last day, and Sherwood says the chairman has been willing to get his chequebook out – but the head coach says he has faith in his current group of players, and he is not expecting any additions today.

“It’s very very unlikely, unless something dramatic happens,” said Sherwood. “Certainly I’m happy with the squad, happy with the numbers. If it [the window] closed now I’d be fine.

“To be fair Daniel’s always asking: ‘Are you sure you don’t need to strengthen in this area? Can I help you in this or that area?’. I’m saying: ‘Look, I’m confident in the players we’ve got and I don’t need any help to strengthen, thanks very much’.

“I think I’ve said from day one that we’ve got a lot of players at the club, and I’ve not changed my opinions just because it’s deadline day.

“I know it’s hectic out there, I know the fans will be out there and they’ll want another 10 signings, but believe me it’s not always the correct way to go about it - just to buy players and throw them at a manager.”

Tottenham have sold Jermain Defoe to FC Toronto this month – the striker will depart for the MLS at the end of February – and a number of Spurs supporters have suggested that a replacement is needed.

Sherwood said: “Lionel Messi would be great, wouldn’t he. He’d be brilliant, let’s hope we can get him at the 11th hour, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

“Fans will want strikers. What they’ve got to look at is that we signed seven players in the summer, and not a lot of teams have done that. We’ve spent an awful lot of money, so we’re strong enough.

“As I’ve said we’ve got strikers at the moment who can do the job, and I’ve got confidence in the numbers that we’ve got here between now and the end of the season.

“We need some of them [our players] to gel. It’s like putting a jigsaw together and hopefully we’ve got some players who are coming back to fitness, which is very important for us, and I’ve got real trust in this squad to take us where the club want to go.”

There were suggestions that Levy and Spurs’ technical director Franco Baldini foisted signings upon Andre Villas-Boas in the summer – but Sherwood says there is no chance that will happen today.

“They can bring them in, they won’t play,” he said. “We’re in it together. They talk about players, we all talk about players together, and unless we’re all in agreement they won’t come in. There’s no point bringing players in that I don’t sanction, because they’re not going to play.”
