Inside Lane: Why Lloris should be voted Spurs’ player of the season

This week, Tottenham’s ‘One Hotspur’ members will be picking their Spurs player of the season ahead of Friday’s voting deadline.

And, for those who have been undecided, Hugo Lloris’ performance against Fulham on Saturday should have made their minds up.

The Frenchman was outstanding against the Cottagers - and not for the first time this season. He was the man of the match at Craven Cottage back in December, and it was no different at White Hart Lane at the weekend.

An unbelievable stop from a bullet Hugo Rodallega header was followed by a penalty save to help Spurs on their way to three points. Fulham must be sick of the sight of Lloris.

Of course, the player of the season isn’t determined by just two games but Lloris has been a model of consistency and professionalism throughout a disappointing season. Indeed, it says a lot that the club’s goalkeeper should win the player of the year award - but Lloris is worthy. He is a hugely popular figure at the club – even the no-nonsense Tim Sherwood raves about the shot stopper.

The Spurs boss said after Saturday’s win: “He’s a top-drawer goalie, a genuine world-class player. He gets on with it, he doesn’t say a lot but just leads by example, and when he’s needed, he’s done brilliantly.

“I think I can compare Hugo to world-class goalies around the world and say ‘yes, he’s up there’.”

Even Sherwood’s detractors must agree with those sentiments.

If Lloris can rightfully claim the player of the season award – becoming only the second goalkeeper to win it since 1990 after Neil Sullivan in 2001 – then it will be clear how much the fans value him, and it could help convince him to stay.

The world’s best goalkeepers like Manuel Neuer, Iker Casillas and Gianluigi Buffon all compete at Champions League level but, with Spurs not offering Lloris that stage next season, and with the likes of PSG and Monaco interested in him, the club face a battle to keep their star player.

There was talk in March of Tottenham offering Lloris a new contract, and that now has to be a priority this summer. Losing the 27-year-old would not go down well with the Spurs faithful, who have grown tired of key players being sold.

Voting him as the player of the season could not only persuade Lloris to stay but show the club that this is a player we do not want to see leave the Lane.
