Inside Lane: No need for Spurs signings in final week of transfer window

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood

Tottenham blogger George Lacey has faith in Spurs’ current squad of players and believes there is no need for panic buying at White Hart Lane.

There is just over a week to go until the transfer window closes, but the current Spurs squad is performing brilliantly under Tim Sherwood.

Sunday’s victory at Swansea means Spurs now have their best away record since Bill Nicholson’s double-winning side of 1960-61, with five consecutive wins on the road in the league.

That also leaves us fifth in the table, only trailing fourth-placed Liverpool on goal difference, so I’m not sure it’s in Sherwood’s interests to delve into the transfer market in the coming days.

The Englishman has already signalled his intentions to give youth their opportunity since he took over from Andre Villas-Boas - and Nabil Bentaleb has been the prime example.

The 19-year-old has persistently featured in central midfield for Spurs since the change in management, and he hasn’t looked out of place among our more expensive stars.

It’s worth noting that Sherwood was playing in central midfield himself when he lifted the Premier League trophy as captain of Blackburn Rovers in 1995, so he knows what he’s looking for in that area of the pitch.

With youth on the agenda, maybe Harry Kane will get more opportunities up top, given Jermain Defoe’s pending departure and the fact that our £26million signing Roberto Soldado is failing to live up to his billing.

I don’t feel much can be gained from more panic buying this time around. When the squad is fully fit, it is as strong as there is in the Premier League and I think we should only do business if a special type of player becomes available.

It is unusual for Spurs to be so quiet in the transfer window, and I believe the dramatic turnaround of events at White Hart Lane has led to Daniel Levy tightening his purse strings.

If Villas-Boas still held the reins, we may well have seen Emmanuel Adebayor departing. But, like Bentaleb, he has taken full advantage of Sherwood’s appointment, and his goals have fired us into a more promising league position.

Summer signing Christian Eriksen is another man who has been rejuvenated under Sherwood and, since the Dane has often been deployed on the left of midfield, Andros Townsend may struggle to get back in the side when he finally returns from injury. Encouragingly, the winger’s eyes will be fixed on Brazil and he’s unlikely to go hiding.

Of course, Sandro, Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul, Paulinho and Erik Lamela are also yet to bolster an outfit which has picked up 16 points from a possible 18 in the Premier League.

My faith has certainly been restored in the squad and, instead of just riding out the storm this season as expected, Champions League qualification looks to be back on the menu again.

The hierarchy may well need to be reviewed at the end of the current campaign, but I have every faith in Sherwood’s methods and he is the man capable of steering Spurs back among the elite.

We have shown great character and impressive performances since AVB departed, and those displays have kept the Tottenham fans on board during an uncomfortable period for the club.

As a result, I don’t think Spurs should be looking at any transfers - unless of course we suffer injuries to our forward line when we host title chasers Manchester City next week.
