Inside Lane: A Spurs fan’s view on the draw at West Brom

Tottenham blogger George Lacey looks back on Saturday’s 3-3 draw against Pepe Mel’s West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

An irrational Spurs performance that we have all grown accustomed to this season was witnessed again at The Hawthorns on Saturday as we drew 3-3 with West Brom after Christian Eriksen’s dramatic late leveller.

It was a game that had virtually everything – the only thing that was missing was a red card really – during a pulsating match. An own goal, a penalty miss and Spurs’ comeback from three goals down made for an enthralling game. However, conceding a goal in the first minute and ending up 3-0 down against Pepe Mel’s side in the first place was another bitter pill to swallow.

Tottenham didn’t lose the game but, as Everton grabbed another three points away at Sunderland, there now lies a dilemma for all concerned with affairs at Tottenham.

With Manchester United in seventh place and just three points behind Spurs with a game in hand, do we try to gain all 12 points on offer in our last four matches or do we shun the prospect of another season in the Europa League?

Spurs’ last four fixtures include home games against Fulham and Aston Villa while we travel to West Ham and Stoke, Last season, we would have been drooling over the prospect of playing these teams.

Personally, I think the club need to revert back to basics and snuff out any unwanted distractions such as the Europa League by aiming to finish seventh, even though that goes against the grain.

If that means putting up with another few under-par, disorganised displays then so be it - a couple more soul-destroying cameos won’t do much harm, and it may well give us a valuable advantage next season.

This campaign has been hard enough to bear, but another season in the Europa League with a squad unequipped to challenge in all competitions could potentially seal another unfortunate manager’s fate.

Tottenham need stability, not another miserable season that draws even more life out of the fans while they still pay to watch us play.

At the end of this season, the club’s management, players and fans alike will sit down and try to pinpoint where this season fell flat on its face. But, with rumours circulating about the possible appointment of legendary Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal as Tim Sherwood’s successor, expectation will soon be heaped back among a crop of multi-million pound players that still haven’t justified their price tags.

Furthermore, any manager that Daniel Levy chooses next will be walking into a football club in need of fast results, on and off the field, which will be a tough ask.

But the strong suggestions that Sherwood’s tenure will end this summer bode well for me, giving us the first sign of a brighter future.
