Inside Lane: A Spurs fan’s view of the home win over Crystal Palace

Spurs bounced back from their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates as the same side triumphed by the same scoreline at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

After a week’s break - which probably felt like a fortnight given our busy Christmas fixture list – we secured another three points, and Tim Sherwood has now won four of his five league games in charge.

The highlight of a very poor first half was arguably one of the worst penalties ever seen in the Premier League - Jason Puncheon’s early howler had more chance of finding the net at Selhurst Park in south London rather than the goal he was supposedly aiming at.

Given that Jermain Defoe’s transfer to Toronto FC was confirmed on Friday, there was a certainly inevitability about him coming off the bench and scoring the second goal.

Christian Eriksen had already put Tottenham ahead when Defoe trotted onto the pitch to replace the disappointing Roberto Soldado, and his appearance was met with rapturous applause - a heartwarming reception which proved that his enthusiasm for goals in a Spurs shirt will be sorely missed.

So, given the striker’s upcoming departure at the end of February, should Tottenham delve into the transfer market and spend more money on a frontman or use the squad we have?

Questions have already been posed to Sherwood regarding the possibilities of more incomings, but our new boss hasn’t given too much away.

Personally, I feel we definitely need another out-and-out goalscorer to play in the No9 role, as the signing of Soldado simply hasn’t gone to plan.

If Harry Kane is to go back out on loan, that would leave us with just two main strikers to choose from and, although Defoe will still be around for a month after the window closes, we don’t want to fall short in the league in the last 10 games, when we need goals.

Maybe the best short-term solution would be to bring in a forward with Premier League experience on a loan deal.

After all, trying to bring someone in halfway through the season for another big fee could prove costly, and I think we should learn from our mistakes on that front.

On the other hand, with so many of our crocked midfielders returning from injury in the next few weeks, we should now reap the benefits of our squad again rather than wasting more money in that area.

Ultimately, Saturday’s victory kept us within two points of fourth-placed Liverpool and we travel to Swansea on Sunday on the back of some very strong form.

Maybe Sherwood’s knee-jerk appointment could prove to be very astute from an otherwise dismissive Daniel Levy.
