Szczesny wants Wenger nod for FA Cup final but admits Fabianski is favourite

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny admits he would love to play in the FA Cup final against Hull but insists he won’t have any complaints if manager Arsene Wenger keeps faith with Lukasz Fabianski.

Second-choice stopper Fabianski has been picked ahead of Szczesny throughout the Gunners’ FA Cup run and the 28-year-old was their penalty shoot-out hero in the semi-final win against Wigan at the weekend.

Szczesny was back between the sticks as Arsenal came from a goal down to beat West Ham 3-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, but he knows his fellow Pole has probably done enough to keep his place when the Gunners attempt to end their nine-year trophy drought at Wembley next month.

“As an Arsenal fan, I just want to get the trophy; it’s not so much about me playing in the competition,” Szczesny said.

“Lukasz has been doing really well and obviously he was a penalty shoot-out hero at Wembley, so I was very happy for him.

“It’s up to the manager who plays. I think Lukasz has done really well and deserves a lot of credit. I’d love to play, obviously, but it’s the manager’s decision.

“For us, it’s just massive to get a trophy. I hope we can please everyone at the club.”

The victory over West Ham ended a dismal run of four league games without a win for Wenger’s men and was sealed by two goals from Lukas Podolski and a wonderful strike from Olivier Giroud after Matt Jarvis had put the Hammers in front.

Arsenal’s next league game is against FA Cup final opponents Hull at the KC Stadium on Sunday and Szczesny believes the three points are all that matter as they vie for fourth place with Everton.

“As long as we get three points, it doesn’t have to be beautiful,” the 23-year-old said.

“Every game is a cup final to us now. We know we have to get the result every single time and wait for Everton to drop something, so it’s very important to win.”

Szczesny admits it “wasn’t very enjoyable” to see Arsenal’s title challenge slip away for another season but he is determined to finish the campaign by qualifying for the Champions League and winning the FA Cup.

“Before the four disappointing results that we had recently, we were still pretty much in the title race, so it has slipped away from us,” he said.

“But it’s important for us to fight for a new challenge now, which is the top four and the FA Cup.

“I don’t think we were slipping away [in the race for the top four]. We’re still confident that we are going to do the job.”
