A royal opening for St Pancras
Her Majesty Queen officially opened the newly refurbished St Pancras station, bringing to a close the £800million project to refurbish the Victorian train shed and ticket hall. The vast, sparkling station was the scene of a spectacular show to welcome in a new era for the old home of the Midland Railway, first opened in 1868. The iconic single-span arch of the Barlow shed, named after its designer William Henry Barlow, is now the home of Eurostar trains, which for the first time will whisk passengers along at 186 miles per hour, and not have to slow down when they emerge from the Channel Tunnel into England.
