It’s the dream for so many – quitting the nine to five routine, bidding farewell to the office manager and starting the job you’ve always aspired to.

But seldom does real life – so often high in responsibilities but low in opportunities – offer such a chance.

Except, perhaps, if you’re Mitan Sachdev - the young accountant who decided to put office tedium to the wind, quit his lucrative job at a top city firm, and start work creating a global falafel chain.

“Ever since I tried my wife’s recipes it’s been my dream to share them with the world,” explained Mr Sachdev, owner of the newly opened Falafel City at the 02 Centre in Finchley Road.

“We went travelling two years ago and the experience was a bit of an awakening for me.

“I worked as a chartered accountant.

“But really I always just wanted to open a restaurant – they’ve always been places I’ve felt at home and I love the idea of feeding people.

“So when I came back I thought ‘what have I got to lose?’.

“And here I am. I’ve quit my job and opened my first restaurant.

“People say to me they couldn’t do what I’ve done - up sticks, abandon their well-paid job to do what they really want to do - but I think you just have to go for it in life.

“And I’ve given myself no plan B for this - so there’s no backing out of it.

“Either it’ll go well or I’ll keep fighting to make sure it’s a success.”

The 32-year-old’s ambitions seem as big as they come.

He’s convinced he can take his falafel recipes – created by his wife Kajal, a lab technician - around the world.

And with queues snaking around the shopping centre’s forecourt during the opening day on Friday (January 10), Finchley Road could very well become the birthplace of the first falafel mega-chain.
