A murder investigation has been launched after a man was found dead at a sheltered flat in Belsize Park yesterday morning.
Detectives last night announced the probe following the discovery of an elderly man with stab wounds at a flat in Spencer House, a sheltered accommodation block in Belsize Park Gardens, at 10.35am yesterday morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An elderly woman was initially arrested at the address and taken to a central London police station.
She has been released and no further action will be taken.
Police were called after concerns for people living at the flat.
When officers arrived they found an elderly man suffering what were believed to be stab wounds.
Det Ch Insp Andy Chalmers, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “At this very early stage in our investigation we have an open mind about what may have taken place, there is no clear motive and my team will not jump to conclusions.
“We’ve got officers carrying out house to house enquiries in the local area looking for neighbours who may have seen something that struck them as out of the usual.
“We believe we know the identity of the victim, but now need to make sure that any family members are informed first.
“Anyone who may be able to help us or who thinks they saw something, I’d ask to get in contact with my team via 020 8358 0100.”
