Pupils and staff at a Swiss Cottage school rolled up their sleeves and baked to raise more than £1,000 for survivors of the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines.

UCL Academy, Adelaide Road, counted up the pennies after their successful cake sale raised £1,102.

The academy, which opened its doors in September last year, also agreed to contribute a further £602 from a sponsored walk in the summer, bringing the total amount raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to £1,704.

Heads of houses came up with the idea of a bake sale after seeing the DEC’s appeal. They asked students to sell their home-made treats to pupils and staff.

Head of Vela House, Sean Davis, said: “It was very well received and the kids really enjoyed selling cakes from their house areas.”
