Historic Burgh House has celebrated the life of a renowned local historian who helped save the arts venue from a council sell-off.

Students from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in Swiss Cottage and family members gathered on Sunday to pay tribute to Christopher Wade, who died on August 24 aged 95.

Mr Wade was one of the “magnificent seven” – a phrase coined by former Ham&High editor Matthew Lewin to honour the saviours of Burgh House from being sold off in 1979.

The students performed while Mr Lewin and Mr Wade’s daughter Joanna Wade and grand-daughter Katherine Wade gave speeches.

About 200 people attended the event remembering the “great champion of Hampstead”.
