The Cazalet Chronicles author Elizabeth Jane Howard who lived in Hampstead with ex-husband Kingsley Amis dies at 90

Author of The Cazalet Chronicles Elizabeth Jane Howard, who moved to Hampstead after marrying novelist Kingsley Amis, has died aged 90.

During her acclaimed literary career of more than 60 years, Ms Howard penned nearly 20 works, including her 2002 memoir Slipstream and The Cazalet Chronicles, a series of five books set in the 1940s that was partly adapted by the BBC.

But her work was often overshadowed by her doomed affairs and marriages, most notably to the writer Kingsley Amis.

It was Lord Amis, her third husband, who persuaded her to move to Hampstead in 1973.

Just eight years later, their marriage collapsed and Ms Howard moved to a flat in Camden Town.

She died peacefully at the age of 90 at her home in Suffolk, where she had moved to in 1990.

The last book in The Cazelet Chronicles, All Change, was published in November last year to glowing reviews.
