Highgate is to retain its free parcel collection service at the Archway Road Post Office after the Royal Mail bowed to pressure from campaigners.

The Royal Mail has also granted a temporary reprieve to Hornsey’s sorting office next month after more than 3,000 people signed a petition against plans to close it – although its relocation is still in the pipeline.

In the meantime, residents will be able to pick up their undelivered parcels for at least the next six months while an alternative location for a collection point is sought in the area.

Highgate Councillor Rachel Allison revealed more than 500 Highgate residents had signed the Liberal Democrat petition to keep their collection point, saying: “I am so pleased that Royal Mail has seen sense, and is retaining the free collection point at Archway Road Post Office.”

Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone added: “The news today is very encouraging. We have taken a huge step towards saving vital local services – and it’s all thanks to the residents who took part in our campaign and signed the Lib Dem petition.”
