In his 80 years, late Eurovision singer Ronnie Carroll stood in several elections to parliament.

But it was in death that he enjoyed his political crowning glory, according to the man who registered him as a Hampstead and Kilburn candidate in May’s general election.

Ronnie died three weeks before election day but remained on ballot papers, which had already been printed, and polled 113 votes as an independent (albeit deceased) candidate.

Close pal Rainbow George Weiss told the Ham&High: “In 30 years, I consider this to be the most successful campaign I’ve been involved in.”

The “icing on the cake”, according to George, was receiving his £500 deposit for Ronnie’s candidacy back from the council as a gesture of goodwill.

Rainbow George has now launched a new party, Ronnie Carroll’s Wonder Party.
