More than half of Camden schools to close in tomorrow’s strike

More than half of Camden’s schools are expected to close tomorrow as part of a nationwide teachers’ strike.

The Ham&High understands that 31 of the borough’s 58 schools will be completely closed and another 13 will be at least partially closed.

Up to six of the borough’s 10 libraries are likely to be closed tomorrow as council workers from Camden UNISON join teachers from the NUT in strike action.

Camden Council is also expecting a significant impact on its housing repairs service based in Holmes Road, Kentish Town, due to the strikes.

The national action also involves the GMB, Unite, PCS and FBU unions.

The teachers’ action is part of a long-running battle with education secretary Michael Gove over performance-related pay, pension schemes and workloads.

Central to the local government dispute is the drop in public sector pay since 2009.

Camden UNISON secretary George Binette said: “Clamping down on public sector pay is an essential element in this government’s austerity agenda, even as the rich really are getting richer, but this strike isn’t just about our local government pay claim.

“This day of action is a more generalised protest against austerity, a regime of cuts and still more privatisation of public services.”
