Camden Council’s only Green councillor has announced she will stand for re-election in May in the face of rumours she would bid to become Hampstead and Kilburn’s next MP.

Maya de Souza, who was elected as Highgate ward councillor in 2006, was re-selected as a Green candidate for the same seat at the party’s AGM.

There was speculation that Cllr de Souza would stand down as Highgate councillor and throw her hat into the ring for the Hampstead and Kilburn parliamentary seat at the 2015 general election.

Cllr de Souza joins Sian Berry as Highgate ward Green candidates at May’s local elections.

Cllr de Souza said: “There are a large number of pressing issues in Highgate Ward. These range from protecting our local library and community centres from cuts to ensuring good planning decisions such as on Athlone House, and ensuring that repairs and regeneration works to our social housing are of good quality as well as good value for money.

“We need able and energetic Green councillors to continue to work on and represent the community on these issues.”

Election campaign issues for the Greens will include social and affordable housing, a better economy including fair pay for workers and support for local businesses, cleaner air, and safer streets.

The Greens are due to put forward a full list of candidates in each ward.
