A 20mph speed limit could be introduced across the whole of Camden in a bid to make the borough’s roads safer.

The new limit, if agreed, would apply to all roads under Camden control.

The local authority says it will also talk to Transport for London (TfL) regarding other streets, including major “red route” roads which TfL controls, such as Finchley Road.

Cllr Phil Jones, cabinet member for sustainability, said: “Introducing a 20mph borough-wide limit in Camden would prevent road casualties and make our streets safer for all. We want to give greater confidence to the pedestrians and cyclists who use our roads and encourage more people to switch to sustainable forms of transport.”

The council’s cabinet will consider a report in December and, if agreed, a public consultation will take place.

“This is not about introducing more road humps,” Cllr Jones said. “It is about beginning to change the culture on our roads in favour of lower speeds.”

The council has said speed humps would not be used to slow traffic.
