Tulip Siddiq’s Hampstead and Kilburn seat could be under threat as the final boundary commission proposals see the new Hampstead seat take in a number of Conservative areas.

The proposals, released today, see a new Hampstead constituency created. Kilburn will be split between a new Willesden and Shepherd’s Bush seat, and Paddington and Queen’s Park.

Making up for the loss, it would pick up the Garden Suburb and Child’s Hill wards from Mike Freer’s Finchley and Golders Green seat.

In the recent council elections, both wards saw a strong Tory vote. The Garden Suburb candidates all polled more than 3300 votes, with their nearest Labour rival only attracting 880 votes.

Child’s Hill fared slightly better, but Labour’s Anne Clark only won her seat on Barnet Council by two votes.

The addition of Highgate, into the new seat, would help ease Labour fears - but it may see a return to the days of 2010 when Glenda Jackson won Hampstead and Kilburn by 42 votes. Her successor, Ms Siddiq secured a thumping majority of 15,560 in 2017.

Ms Siddiq said: “These proposals are nothing short of an undemocratic power grab by this Tory Government. By trying to reduce the number of backbench MPs while leaving all ministers in their places, the Government is set to weaken the role of MPs to hold the Government to account. These changes will see Theresa May’s Brexit Government strengthened at the expense of parliamentary scrutiny at a time when we need it most.

“Labour have said that a boundary review is much needed ahead of the next General Election - however these proposals by the Government make no sense in the context of Brexit. The workload of MPs is set to rise following March 2019, especially considering all the legislative changes that will be necessary following our exit. Given this, it makes no sense to push ahead and arbitrarily cut 50 MPs from the House.”

Mike Freer’s Finchley and Golders Green seat would be carved up in new Hendon, Finchley and Enfield Southgate, and Chipping Barnet seats.

Meanwhile Sir Keir Starmer’s Holborn and St Pancras seat would be renamed Camden and St Pancras, and include Archway and Tufnell Park. They currently fall into Jeremy Corbyn’s Islington North seat. The southern end of the shadow Brexit secretary’s seat will become part of the Cities of London and Westminster.

East Finchley, which currently falls within Finchley and Golders Green would become part of Finchley and Enfield Southgate.

There would also be changes to Labour’s Catherine West’s seat. Plans for Hornsey and Wood Green see the constituency split, and Wood Green becoming part of Tottenham. The seat would be renamed Hornsey.

Any boundary proposals would have to be passed by Parliament, with the DUP thought to be unhappy about proposals for Northern Ireland.
