North Westminster was awash with red, white and blue as dozens of street parties took place to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

But for one group of Lisson Green pensioners the celebrations were even more special as they were lucky enough to attend one of the country’s most exclusive events.

They took the short trip to Downing Street for lunch with the Prime Minister on Sunday.

With just 120 guests invited to join the celebrations, 10 members of the Lisson Green over-50s club were given the chance to enjoy Jubilee cup cakes and tea with David Cameron.

Originally scheduled to take place in the street outside Number 10, heavy rain forced the party inside – which allowed guests to explore Downing Street.

Group organiser Dolly Cuthbert, 83, found out about the invitation 10 days before the party and she said everyone had a brilliant time.

“We drove into Downing Street and security just let us straight through – which was a wonderful feeling,” she said.

“When we were sat down inside, David Cameron came round and spoke to a few of us.

“He asked me what I did and I said I ran the over-50s club, although most of us are over 70. He suggested we should change our name!

“There were so many rooms in there I was amazed. Our whole group was over the moon and couldn’t believe that we were in there.”

Major festivities were attended by millions in the south of the borough, including the Jubilee Pageant along the River Thames and the Jubilee Concert outside Buckingham Palace.

But north Westminster saw its fair share of action with St John’s Wood High Street adorned with bunting and hundreds of locals attending street parties.

The Royal Family even took inspiration from Little Venice, with Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie dazzling at official events over the weekend in dresses designed by the Suzannah boutique in Bristol Gardens.
