Highgate could lose a second incumbent councillor next month after it was revealed Cllr Sally Gimson is bidding to stand as a Labour MP in Sheffield.

Cllr Gimson is hoping to be selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Heeley ahead of next year’s general election, despite standing for re-election as a Highgate councillor next month.

She is one of 13 candidates vying to replace Meg Munn who is stepping down as Labour MP for Sheffield Heeley at next year’s election.

A final shortlist of candidates to replace Ms Munn is set to be announced by Labour chiefs next week, followed by a final decision on the successful candidate in May.

Cllr Gimson, who was elected as a Highgate councillor in a by-election in 2011, lost out last year to Cllr Tulip Siddiq in the fight to become Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn.

If she is successful in Sheffield, Cllr Gimson will join the Green Party’s Maya de Souza in stepping down as a Highgate councillor.
