The Labour candidate bidding to represent Highgate at the next general election stood in the drizzle and damp to protest against Tube fare rises on Monday.

Catherine West, bidding to be the next Hornsey and Wood Green MP, was joined by Cllr Claire Kober, Labour leader of Haringey Council, and Lourdes Keever, Labour council candidate for Crouch End, outside Highgate Tube Station.

They were protesting against planned fare rises to be rolled out across the Transport for London network from January 19.

Fares will increase on average by 2.7 per cent and Cllr West, who is Labour’s candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green, believes fares are rising faster than wages, contributing to Camden and Haringey’s “cost of living crisis”.

The price of a Travelcard will increase by 3.1pc, which is broadly in line with national rail ticket rises.

TfL says the rises will cover the cost of engineering works so it can deliver a more reliable service and increase capacity on the Underground network.
