Today

Ambassadors from Poland, Romania, Portugal and Japan will join Holocaust survivors at the London Jewish Cultural Centre, North End Road, Golders Green, for a service from 10.30am-12.15pm. The Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Melvin Cohen, MP Mike Freer, actor Tom Conti and distinguished guests are due to attend.

Sunday, January 26

Holocaust survivor Freddie Knoller will talk about his experiences and answer questions at The Jewish Museum, Albert Street, Camden Town. The event, from 11am-1pm, is open to the public but booking is essential.

Haringey Council will officially mark Holocaust Memorial Day at its fifth annual multifaith service at Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, Tottenham, from 2pm-3pm. The event is open to the public.

The New End Theatre Beyond and West London Synagogue present The Ceremony, a play by Eva Hoffman based on true events in the Polish village of Jedwabne in July 1941. The reading will start at 7pm, with a service preceding it at 6pm led by Rabbi Helen Freeman at West London Synagogue in Upper Berkeley Street, Marylebone.

Angel In The Forest, a concert commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day, will be performed at the North Western Reform Synagogue, Alyth Gardens, Hampstead Garden Suburb, at 7.30pm, with afternoon workshops beforehand from 2pm. It is a dramatic song cycle with text by Gertrud Kolmar and is composed by Julian Marshall.

Holocaust survivor Janine Webber will share her fascinating testimony at South Hampstead Synagogue, Eton Villas, Eton Road, at 7pm. The memorial event is hosted in conjunction with the Holocaust Educational Trust, which aims to educate young people on the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust. Members of Camden’s Faith Leaders Forum will also attend.

Monday, January 27

UK commemorations will begin early today, as a candle is lit by senior government minister Ben Helfgott MBE, Holocaust survivor and honorary president of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, during a moment of reflection at King’s Cross railway station at 8.15am. There will be performances by an intercultural choir and arts groups in the station throughout the morning until noon. Visitors will be invited to sign luggage tags pledging to Take a Step for Holocaust Memorial Day. These will be displayed at a commemorative event at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster from 2.30pm-5pm.

Tuesday, January 28

Belsize Square Synagogue, Belsize Square, Belsize Park, welcomes Allan Noel-Baker as guest speaker at its service of commemoration. Mr Noel-Baker is the grandson of Philip Noel-Baker, the MP who instigated the famous debate in Parliament on November 21, 1938, in response to Kristallnacht. The debate concluded with the decision to create the Kindertransport, through which some 10,000 Jewish children found refuge in Britain. Rabbi Stuart Altshuler will lead the service, which begins at 2pm.
