School children and war veterans gathered across Hampstead and Highgate to pay tribute to fallen servicemen.

Pupils from Heath Street School and Christ Church Primary School were joined by the Mayor of Camden, Cllr Heather Thompson, for a remembrance service by the war memorial at Whitestone Pond in Hampstead.

Reverend Paul Conrad of Christ Church in Hampstead conducted the service and school children laid wreaths at the memorial on Friday (November 9).

Brian Keys and Alexander William Rudelhoff, who have both seen active service in Malaya, helped pay for the restoration of the memorial on the edge of Hampstead Heath and were also in attendance.

Mr Keys, from Heath Street in Hampstead, said: “If you’ve been in the forces, that loyalty stays with you for ever. We’re delighted it’s brought the place back to life.”

Hampstead Town Councillor Simon Marcus, who also held an impromptu two minute silence at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday (November 11), said: “It was wonderful to see so many young people learning about the sacrifices made throughout history to enable us to live today. Sometimes we do not reflect enough on these things.”

Members of the Hornsey Cadet Force, based at the Hornsey Cadet Centre, and the Middlesex Regiment Territorial Army Association took part in a wreath laying service at the Hornsey War Memorial, in Park Road, on Sunday (November 11).

Afterwards the cadets marched to a service held at Hornsey Parish Church, on the corner of Park Road and Cranley Gardens in Muswell Hill.
