The Friends of Kenwood House in Hampstead fear English Heritage cost-cutting could diminish the property’s famous collection of artwork.

Left to the nation in the Iveagh bequest, it includes a Rembrandt piece and one of only four Vermeer works in the UK.

As English Heritage looks to be self-funding by 2023, it will share one curator across three of its London properties – Chiswick House, Marble Hill House, and Kenwood.

Helen Payne of the Friends of Kenwood told the Ham&High: “We believe Kenwood deserves its own curator, and this will be a downgrade. We recognise English Heritage’s money worries, but would have liked them to look into other options. For example, they could consider a commercial sponsor.”

English Heritage said although one curator will work across the three properties, an assistant will be at Kenwood full time. A spokesman said: “English Heritage is committed to ensuring its paintings and interiors are properly cared for.”
