Former child protection boss Sharon Shoesmith received a payout of nearly £680,000 over her unfair dismissal in the wake of the Baby P scandal, according to Haringey Council’s accounts.

Ms Shoesmith was dismissed from her £133,000-a-year post as director of children’s services in December 2008 by then-Children’s Secretary Ed Balls after a damning Ofsted report on the death of 17-month-old Peter Connelly.

But the Court of Appeal ruled her dismissal was unfair in 2011, and ordered Haringey Council to pay her an amount, which neither party was able to disclose due to a confidentiality agreement.

However, the council’s draft accounts for 2013/2014, published online, show a breakdown of the settlement they reached with Ms Shoesmith

The accounts state there were three elements to the payout, including payments of salary, fees and allowances amounting to £377,266, payments for compensation for loss of office at £217,367 and £84,819 in payments of employer pension contributions - reaching a total of £679,452.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Shoesmith said: “This is not a figure I recognise. I have made a confidential agreement with Haringey that prevents me giving the actual figures.”

A Haringey Council spokesman would not comment on the exact sum, but said: “Following the decision of the Court of Appeal in favour of Ms Shoesmith, and the court’s direction that the parties seek to resolve the issue of compensation, Haringey and Ms Shoesmith have reached a settlement in this case.

“The terms of the settlement are confidential. We are unable to comment further on this matter.”
