Haringey approves eight-bedroom ‘mega-home’ in Highgate

A entire block of flats would have a smaller footprint than a “mega-home” waved through by a council planning committee, a councillor has claimed.
Cllr Rachel Allison argued against knocking down the 1930s home in Denewood Road, near Highgate Golf Course, and replacing it with an eight bedroom house more than double its size.
The building’s facade will remain much as it stands now, the extensions will double its size at the rear and include a large basement with a swimming pool, staff quarters, cinema and steam and sauna rooms.
Cllr Allison told a planning sub-committee on Monday: “The increased footprint is so large and [the roof] so much higher.
“You could build a block of flats on there and you would have less of a footprint.”
She added: “It is like cleansing Highgate – nobody lives in these houses. It is removing all the voters from Highgate.”
Cllr Allison also said the large building could be used for “a health spa”, as a previous application included a hairdressers, three beauty rooms and a sauna.
Her worries and those of neighbours were dismissed and planning permission was granted.
