The team of 12 children from Garden Suburb Junior School, in Childs Way, won first prize in the Barnet Schools Chess League Division One on January 30.

It is another impressive achievement for the school, which celebrated victory in a national schools chess competition last summer.

Pupils of all ages, from Year 3 to Year 6, attend lunchtime chess training sessions at the school each week.

The school offers expert chess tuition from coach Rob Willmoth and International Master Lorin D’Costa.

Headteacher Eileen Bhavsar said: “We’ve got a long history of being successful in the chess world, so it’s not unusual for us to win these kind of competitions.

“Coaches like working with our children because our children are very able and they are supported by their parents.

“To be this good at chess the children have to play a lot of chess outside of school.”
