The Tate Modern’s blockbuster exhibition of Henri Matisse cut-outs opened to rave reviews this month.

But the lucky people of Hampstead are now able to see some of the French artist’s work without schlepping to the South Bank, thanks to Gilden’s Arts Gallery.

The gallery, which has been in Heath Street for eight years, opened its very own Matisse exhibition last week.

Gilden’s has about 40 pieces including original drawings, etchings, lithographs and the full portfolio of “Jazz” prints, one of 100 produced from the original cut-outs.

“We thought it would be nice to time it when everyone is interested in the subject,” said gallery assistant Veronica Czeisler Acquavella.

“You can see the work up closer in a more intimate setting. And you don’t have to pay £18 to get in!”

The exhibition, which is free, runs until June 30.
