Former prime minister Gordon Brown opened a new library at Highgate School this morning in honour of world-renowned historian Sir Martin Gilbert.

Mr Brown addressed an audience in the library and paid tribute to Sir Martin, a former Highgate School pupil, who is currently recovering in a nursing home having recently suffered a stroke.

He then unveiled a plaque bearing the historian’s name to be erected above the entrance to the new library.

The Labour MP, who served as prime minister between 2007 and 2010, is the first former PM to visit the prestigious independent school, in North Road, Highgate, in its 449-year history.

He told the Ham&High: “The library is in commemoration and celebration of Martin Gilbert who is a famous pupil of the school and it’s good to see the school doing so well.”
