Film director Ken Loach joined a Camden organisation promoting ties between the borough and Palestine to celebrate its 10th birthday.
The Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association (CADFA) has been linked with Abu Dis, a Palestinian town of just over 10,000 people, for the past 10 years.
At the event at the Old Hampstead Town Hall in Haverstock Hill last Tuesday, Mr Loach gave a speech about “the things that were going on in Palestine that really shouldn’t be going on,” according to CADFA director Nandita Dowson.
The organisation, which promotes human rights in the region, has facilitated more than 50 exchange visits between Camden and Palestine.
“People have made genuine friendships,” said Ms Dowson. “The links between Camden and Abu Dis have become multi-stranded now.”
But Ms Dowson said their work is far from done.
“There’s this horrendous, sad situation in Palestine and unfortunately I would say it’s worse, not better than 10 years ago,” she said.
